special class of glycoproteins

Proteoglycans They are a special class of glycoproteins that are highly glycosylated. The molecules are formed by a protein nucleus that is covalently bound to a special type of polysaccharides called glycosaminoglycans (GAG).

These chains of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are long polymers of linear carbohydrates that are negatively charged under physiological conditions, due to the presence of sulfate groups and uronic acid groups nulante. The chains of polysaccharides are very rigid and hydrophilic so they tend to occupy large volumes in relation to their mass forming gels.
